Polymarket US must close Michigan sports contracts by 25 November

Michigan has secured a court-approved agreement ending Polymarket US sports event contracts for state customers. Existing positions must close by 25 November, while a wider legal appeal remains unresolved.

The deadline for Michigan customers

Michigan's Gaming Control Board announced on 28 October 2026 that QCX LLC, which operates as Polymarket US, agreed to stop offering new sports-related event contracts to Michigan customers. The arrangement was approved by the US District Court for the Western District of Michigan. It concerns sports contracts in one state, not a shutdown of the entire Polymarket platform.

Michigan customers with existing sports positions can close them before the end of 25 November 2026, Eastern Time. Under the agreement, any affected positions still open at that deadline must be closed. The regulator's public announcement does not specify an execution price or payout formula for positions that remain open, so holders should check the operator's direct account notices before assuming how their contracts will be settled.

A negotiated restriction, not a final nationwide ruling

The Michigan regulator regards the sports event contracts as wagering products that require a state gambling licence. Polymarket challenged state enforcement in federal court in March. Its request for an immediate restraining order was denied that month, followed by a denial of preliminary relief in June. Its appeal remains pending before the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

In exchange for Polymarket's compliance with the stipulation, Michigan agreed not to pursue enforcement against the company under the arrangement. The agreement does not establish a final nationwide ruling on whether federal derivatives regulation displaces state sports-betting law. Independent reporting by Legal Sports Report and SBC Americas confirms that the litigation and wider jurisdictional dispute continue.

How Michigan's four prediction-market actions differ

Polymarket is the fourth prominent event-contract platform to stop, or be ordered to stop, offering sports contracts in Michigan. Robinhood Derivatives and Coinbase Financial Markets reached negotiated agreements, while Kalshi faced a state-court preliminary injunction. The common practical result is reduced access to sports contracts, but the legal instruments and their deadlines differ.

The Polymarket agreement is expressly about sports-related event contracts for Michigan customers. It should not be read as a ban on every prediction market category, an instruction to close non-sports contracts, or permission to bypass another jurisdiction's rules. For an affected customer, the immediate task is to identify any open Michigan sports positions and review the platform's instructions ahead of the 25 November close-out.
